Cameroon, South Africa and Nigeria were cutting off fake phones for security and health reasons. Now Tanzania has joined the campaign to cut off their fake phones. The population of Tanzania is 49 million and around 33 million people are using mobile phones. According to official reports, almost 3% of all the mobile phones in the country are fake.
Telecom authority has disconnected 630,000 million fake phones at midnight and 1.2 million more will be disconnected. Even though most people have appreciated the action and expect more counterfeits to be terminated, still some people have complained that they did not know that their phones were fake. An opposite party argues that the action is only taken because the government could protect the market from fake phones.
Mr. Edwin Ngonyani, Deputy Communication Minister has explained that since many criminals use fake phones which don’t have IMEI codes and thus are unable to be tracked down, the government action of cutting the fake phones will help to detect criminals.
Moreover, since almost all fake phones spread more harmful radiation and made out of more harmful materials, they infect more to the health of the users. Thus the action will also help the health and the wellness of the users.
To disconnect the communication agency launched a new system to register the IMEI numbers of every phone. And once all the IMEI numbers are registered, they have used the data to cut off the fake ones.
The users should check their IMEI numbers by dialing *#06# and then send the IMEI number to 15090. The system will reply with the model name of the phone if the phone is original and if the correct name is not given, then the phone is fake.
Sellers of the original phones are happy as they believe that now they will have more customers as everybody will want an original phone.
